Distribution. In the northern part of Europe: in Sweden, the island of Gotland and in Latvia, Kurzeme.
Morphology. Summer-green, 2–7 m tall tree or shrub. The new shoots naked, purple. Spines few, 1 cm long. Leaves 1,5–4,2 cm long and 1,0–3,5 cm wide, obovate, widely obovate or elliptical, with a wedge-shaped base, with 3–5 lobes. Leaves on the upper surface saturated green, pale, naked or with sparse hairs along the main vein, on the lower surface paler, with sparse hairs. Flowers in naked corymbs by 7–12 together, a receptacle usually naked. Flowers white. Fruits red, 9–12 mm long and 7–10 mm wide, elliptical or widely elliptical. Stones 1–2. Blooms in June, fruits ripen in October and gradually fall off.
Ecology. Is found in shrublands.
Importance. An important component of Latvian landscape, excels with the dark foliage. The species should be conserved, because it is rare.
